Basic introduction

Due to the different process improvement, repeated training, evaluation and improvement activities and uncoordinated activities in different fields, the capability maturity model and other similar problems, with the involvement of the U. S. Department of Defense, Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University (CMUISEI) released CMMI 1. 1 in December 2001, which includes four areas: Software Engineering (SW),  Systems Engineering (SE), Integrated Product and Process Development (IPPD), and procurement (SS).

CMMI certification, namely "Capability Maturity Model Integration", is a special certification for software enterprises. CMMI certification is an international standard for identifying enterprises in the development process and quality management. Most of the global software production standards are based on this standard and strive to become a member of the CMMI certification team.

CMMI provides a single integrated framework for improving various processes of an organization. The new integration model framework eliminates the inconsistency of each model, reduces the duplication between models, increases transparency and understanding, and establishes an automatic and extensible framework. As a result, the quality and efficiency of the organization can be improved in general. The main focus of CMMI is cost-effectiveness, clear focus, process concentration and flexibility.

Its purpose is to help software enterprises manage and improve the software engineering process, enhance the development and improvement ability, so as to develop high-quality software on time and within budget. By gearing to international standards with CMMI certification , it can improve the added value of products and create new value of the industry.

There are two different ways to implement CMMI:

Continual- It mainly measures the project capability of an enterprise

Stage type - It mainly measures the maturity of an enterprise


Software enterprises should evaluate their own enterprises before CMMI certification, because there are five levels of CMMI. The higher the level, the higher the maturity of software organization. Only clear their own environment can we distinguish which level of CMMI certification should be done by their own enterprises.

There are five levels of CMMI:

CMMI level 1: initial level.

The enterprise's goal and effort of the project are very clear, and the goal of the project can be achieved. However, due to the great contingency in the completion of tasks, enterprises can not guarantee that they can still complete tasks when implementing similar projects.

The project implementation at the first level of an enterprise depends heavily on the implementation personnel.

CMMI Level 2: management level.

Enterprises can abide by the established plan and process in project implementation, have resources preparation, assign rights and responsibilities to people, train relevant project implementation personnel, monitor and control the whole process, and review the project and process with superior units.

At the second level, the enterprise embodies a series of management procedures for the project. It ensures that all project implementation of the enterprise will be successful.

CMMI Level 3: definition level.

Enterprises can institutionalize the management system and the process according to their own special conditions and their own standard processes. Enterprises can not only be successfully implemented in similar projects, but also in different types of projects.

In this stage, the scientific management of enterprises has formed corporate culture, which is the connotation of enterprises.

CMMI Level 4: quantitative management level.

Enterprise project management not only forms a system, but also realizes digital management. The management process should be quantified and digitized. Through quantitative technology to achieve the stability of the process, to achieve the accuracy of management, reduce the fluctuation of project implementation quality.

CMMI Level 5: optimization level.

Enterprise project management has reached the highest level. Enterprises should be able to make full use of information materials to prevent possible defective products in the process of project implementation. Can actively improve the process, the use of new technology to achieve process optimization.

CMMI provides guidance for process improvement rather than process or process description. The actual process used by an organization depends on many factors, including application area, organizational framework and size.
